MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTIONS ST MARTIN’S CHURCH
The monumental inscriptions record for the graveyard of St Martin’s Church South Willingham (still being compiled) is composed of the following elements: Plans. Photograph of each monument. Text displayed on monument – NB! The appended text comprises a mixture of what is currently legible and the recorded text of a survey done circa 1986 (for anyone accessing the original survey care should be taken as there are a number of fundamental mistakes in the document! In addition, a further survey carried out some twenty years later (and held by the Church Wardens), whilst providing a useful set of layout plans of the churchyard, seems to have simply replicated the inscriptions recorded during the 1986 survey, mistakes and all.). Surname index. Some of the inscriptions are now completely illegible, with lichens eating into the stonework and some of the more porous headstones have stone spalling off due to the alternate effects of water ingress and frost. I have attempted to authenticate and correct where found to be inaccurate, all the original work carried out in 1986; however, some of the legend that was apparently visible in 1986 on certain headstones is no longer legible – in these circumstances I have simply replicated the original record. In the St. Martin’s Church is on the inside wall a memorial bronze plate for the Rector Revd. James Mainguy (1804-1883)
He is a full family member of the English Maingay family. There is a little difference in writing of the name ,because in the past the name was written in several ways. In 1804 when he was born at Guernsey his fathers name was Nicholas Maingy (1747-1826) His mother Maria born Falla was the second wife of Nicholas. He maried her after his first wife died in early 1797
He was the Rector of the Ste Marie du Castel Church and parish at Guernsey from 1843 till1860.
The descendants ,I have contact with are mainly living in British Comlumbia and Ontario. One of his grantsons was Edmond Rollo (1901-1927) Rear Admiral of the Canadian fleet. Also his son Daniel Nicholas (1930-2010) was Rear Admiral and head of the Canadian fleet.
Revd. James Mainguy died in Louth on the 28th of January 1883 Sofar I understand he is not burried in the church-yard
of the St.Martin Church neither at the St. Mary in Hainton.
I am trying to find the grave / tomb also in Guernsey of Revd. James Mainguy and of his wife Charlotte born Beckwith ,but sofar in vain.
Is there any body in the parish who can sign a light on same.
Up till now I could not make email-contact neither , nor direct contact with the warden of St. Martin Church mr.Edmondson.
In one or other way the warden seems to be afraid to have contact with me.
I liked the picters and wording of the web-site. Regards Harry Maingay
Sorry I made a mistake . The year that Edmond Rollo died was not 1927 ,but 1979.
Harry Maingay
Harry, thanks for the post. I will pass this onto to someone who may be able to help.

Hoe kom ik in contact met the Church-warden van de St. Martin Church in South Willingham zijn naam is mr.Marcus Edmundson
The burial records for St Martin’s are currently in the Lincolnshire Archive. However, we think Marcus may have a copy or a plan of the graveyard. I will contact Marcus and let you know.

What a wonderful record of the churchyard -well done
Hiya. I have a large website about the Curtois family, which will give you more information about some of the people mentioned above:
http://www.chradams.co.uk/Curtois/rowland2.html
I was wondering if I could use you photos?
Thanks,
Chris
Thank you for all your time in publishing this information. I never knew there was a headstone for my Great Grandparents (Joseph & Harriet Green) and their Grandson Maurice Bontoft who was my mother’s brother and whose christian name I was given. My Great Uncle Jack Green was the son of Joseph and Harriet and married Sarah whose maiden name was Bett. Uncle Jack was the chauffeur to the Heneage family at Hainton Hall. I still have my Grandmother’s (Annie Green) Bible which was presented to her by the Rev. Temperley. Thank you.
Great to find these records, well done. As a child I remember visiting relatives in South Willingham but could not remember who they were. Thanks to your work I have solved the puzzle because I now know they were my fathers aunt and uncle. Used to get off the LRC bus at the corner and walk down the lane to the village.
Thanks Paul, I’ll contact Roy
Penny
Can you please correct all the Question marks to the correct wording as set out below
Reference G8 Plan 3 Wattam Jane Elizabeth.
The inscription on headstone reads as I have set out.
“In affectionate remembrance
Of Jane Elizabeth (Brocklebank)
The dearly belovered wife of Thomas Wattam
Who departed this life October 19th. 1871
Aged 29 years
Farewell dear husband and children,
My life has passed.
I’ve dearley loved you to the last.
A sudden change, I have a moment well,
I had not time to bid my friends farewell,
There is nothing strange – death happens all,
And tomorrow you may fall.
This completes the wording so you can remove all the question marks.
I have taken them with impressions of wax paper and penciled over the paper to get the wording and on returning back home to New Zealand I have been told it was also in the family bible and I had it all correct
Thank you for ammending

Hello Ron, many thanks for completing the inscription on the lower part of the headstone – this was just one of several that I intended to get back to and attempt to complete (some are practically illegible). I have updated the website accordingly and the entry now reads precisely as per the wording on the headstone. Kind regards, Stewart
Hello Ron
I wonder if yourself or anyone could help me with any information regarding the Betts (Bett) family of South Willingham as i am trying to gather information for my family tree research, and believe some of the Betts on your website to be related to me somewhere along the line.
My 3rd great grandfather was William Bett of South Willingham, born abt 1799, his father was Thomas Bett also of South Willingham, born abt 1756 he married a Rebecca White.
My father was Charles Bett who sadly died when i was only 9 (1960) so i have little knowledge of my Bett family as i left Louth with my mother on his death. I remember as a child visiting a uncle who had a farm in this area but cannot remember much else.
It is only through ancestry i have discovered most of my Bett family to be from the Louth area.
Regards Elaine
Hi Elaine,
I cannot connect you to my tree with those names and dates, but if the tree can go farther now from Thomas (b. 1756), I might be able to connect him to my relatives, then out of Whaplode Drove and Benniworth, Lincolnshire. My 7x Great Grandfather is John Betts (b. 1714 in Whaplode Drove), his father is John Betts (b. abt. 1685 Whaplode Drove), his father is John Betts (m. Elizabeth Man 1680)
Have A Good Night,
Ashley
I recall Johnny and Ella Betts who lived on Barkwith Road .I am in my 50s and when I was little we used to go and play dominoes with them .They seemed very ancient and I guess would have been born circa 1880s .Ella was a musician and John was a retired farmer he was a dreadful tease and used to wiggle his ears .My sister and I were quite frightened of him .Thy had no children .
The Betts married into the Catlow family and my grandprents were very friendly with them , A daughter Margaret married someone called Bickford and lived in the cottage half way down station road .
Thank you i will try and research this lead further.
Regards elaine
hi this is a wonderful resource for anyone researching their Tree in this area. Finding where an ancestor is laid to rest is very special and to have a photo is a consolation if distance is too far to visit. Ever thought of uploading them to Findagrave as I know this is a resource that many use in their search.
Hi,
Brilliant record of the churchyard. One query though. Record G17 plan 1, could it be Cordey instead of Gordey. It fits with my family history research and I wondered if it was actually William Cordey.
Thanks
James
Ref G24 plan 2 should read Chris Chapman and NOT Chris Charman who died 11th July 1996 as per the inscription on gravestone. He was my father.

Wow, what a wonderful list & pictures of the cemetery in South Willingham. I was hoping to find some of my relatives as they were from there, but no such luck. Looking for William White B: 1796, D: 1843, married to Charlotte Wilkinson White B: 1893, D: 1870 both buried in So. Willingham. Also John White B: 1744, D: 1826, married to Susanna Bett B: 1764.
My gg grandfather Wilkinson White B: 1826 , married to Frances Iremonger B: 1828, came to US about 1880. I have pictures of So. Willingham from my grandmothers photo album. All of the 9 children of Wilkinson White & France Iremonger White we’re born in So. Willingham, between 1851 & 1875.
Hello Pat, I have just read your email on the South Willingham website and see you are a descendant of Wilkinson White. The White’s are my husband’s family and he descends from John White & Elizabeth Waters, then their son John b.1744 who married Susannah Bett b.1764, in 1783. Their son, William, b.1796, was the father of Wilkinson White, but his brother John b.1792 is my husband’s ancestor (3x great-grandfather). Next we have John’s son, William b.1819 (2x great-grandfather) and his son, Moses, b.1846 (great-grandfather), who left South Willingham and became Gamekeeper of Speke Hall near Liverpool, England. Hope this is of interest to you.
Regards
Sheila White
Hello! I’m a descendant of Wilkinson and Francis White through their daughter Fanny. She was married to John Harrison and my ggreat grandmother, Maude, was the last of their children born in England right before they left for the US in 1881. They settled in Condon, Oregon where John was a livestock farmer and owned the local butcher shop. Wilkinson and Francis started a school there for all of the English children. They’re buried in Papersack Cemetary in Condon. I would love to see any old pictures anyone has of them or their home. Julia
Julia, good to hear from you, my g-grandmother was Eva Charlotta White Magee daughter to Wilkinson White, born in S. Willingham and later homesteaded in Condon, Oregon. We have visited the cemetery in Papersack and I have pictures. If interested, let me know and I will send some to you. snyderdennis_1@msn.com Pat Wilson Snyder
Hi Pat,
Yes, the Whites are on the database, William appears on a number of Censuses, along with his family. Download the database from the History Data Files on the History Group menu (at the top of all screens on this website). We would love an electronic copy of your pictures and any other records that include South Willingham you might like to share (emigration date?)! We are trying to work out where (that is which house) everybody lived in the village, which is a big task. Any clues would be good!
The database includes the above grave stone inscriptions, wedding, baptism and burial and banns details, as well as 1841 to 1911 censuses and soon, the 1939 pre war census. An updated copy of the database is being prepared and will be available in a few months; the data is still work in progress and awaits one of us recording the various registers.
Enjoy browsing the database! Tim
I would love to send you some pictures from my Great grandmother’s album, but I am not sure how I should send them and to what address. She left South Willingham at age 15. She was born 1865, so the pictures had been taken sometime prior to 1880.
Hi Pat, I have filled in my email address below so perhaps you could forward some photos to it. I would love to see them.
Regards
Sheila
