My grandfather and grandmother Edmund and Beatrice Mary Baker used to farm at Rookery Farm, Hainton until about 1955. They then bought the Old Rectory and my father, Cyril Baker took over the running of Rookery Farm, a role he had previously shared with his father Edmund Baker. I spent many a happy Saturday cycling over to The Old Rectory to see my grandparents and play with my friends and cousins (the Seabourne family) in the village. I used to have lunch with my grandparents, something I looked forward to very much.
The annual village fete was held on the lawn of the house and there was a pond in the corner of the garden close to the path down to the Church. As children we built a raft to float on the pond.
There was a paddock with the Old Rectory and it is on the Barkwith Road edge of this paddock that my grandparents had the bungalow named Millandreath built. I can’t recall the date the bungalow was built but I do remember there was a vegetable patch in the garden which I used to dig this over for my grandfather.
Seeing these photos brings back some wonderful childhood memories so many thanks for that.
My grandfather Edmund Baker died in 1971 and my grandmother died two years later in 1973.
My father bought the Old Rectory from Edmund Baker. My family lived there for twenty odd years. I have a lot of fond memories of the time I spent there. Kevin Anderson
